We have grown used to thinking that our hyper-industrialized societies were exclusively visual. It appears, however, that the advent of the internet has actually allowed the text to dominate the image. Indeed, search engines, the main means of access to data, are essentially textual. Put simply, pictures do not exist on a numeric support unless they bear a title, the criteria of the images classification. It is exclusively thanks to titles, or text, that we can find pictures.

This domination feeds into the complex and historically stratified relation between these two schemes of thought. There has always been an interlace, or if you want a problem, a question, a no man's land between the alpha-numeric and the iconographic.

How can we use this domination against itself? Is it possible to create a narration between text and images? Can we rethink the relation between pictures and text according to new modes?

"In the Picture of the Text" is a generator that indefinitely produces a textual fiction, inspired by the work of Alain Robbe-Grillet, "inventor" of the nouveau roman. Some words of this fiction are sent to a search engine that displays pictures. Does this produce an exact translation? Is there a narrative congruence between the generated text and these pictures that come from the cybernetic flux? What story is told by this automatic and abnormal translation?

On a trop vite fait de penser nos sociétés hyper-industrialisées comme exclusivement visuelles. Avec Internet le texte domine l'image. En effet pour exister physiquement sur un support numérique, chaque image porte un titre qui est le critère de sa classification. Les moteurs de recherche, qui sont le moyen d'accès aux données numériques, sont essentiellement textuels. Et lorsqu'on cherche une image c'est encore par son titre qu'on y parvient.

Cette domination interroge la relation complexe et historiquement stratifiée entre ces deux régimes de pensée. Il y a toujours eu un entrelac, ou si vous voulez un problème, une question, un no man's land entre l'alpha-numérique et l'iconographique.

Comment utiliser cette domination contre elle-même? Est-il possible de proposer une narration dans l'entre-deux du texte et de l'image? Peut-on repenser selon de nouvelles modalités les rapports entre l'image et le texte?

A l'image du texte est un générateur qui produit indéfiniment une fiction textuelle en s'inspirant librement de l'écriture d'Alain Robbe-Grillet, "inventeur" du nouveau roman. Certains mots de cette fiction sont envoyés à un moteur de recherche qui va permettre d'afficher des images. Celles-ci sont-elle la traduction exacte des mots? Existe-t-il un passage narratif entre le texte généré et ces images qui proviennent du flux cybernétique? Quelle histoire est racontée par cette traduction automatique et anormale?
