About Susan

Susan "Sass" Brown was the 1994-1995 Ruth Lilly fellow in poetry and a 1998 Bread Loaf Writers' Conference Poetry Scholar. Her poetry has appeared in Black Warrior Review, Crazyhorse, Quarterly West, Hayden's Ferry Review, Beloit Poetry Journal, Gulf Coast, Sonora Review, Poetry Northwest, and elsewhere.

Currently, she is a freelance writer and the artist behind Sass Brown Designs, specializing in jewelry and accessories made with vintage game pieces and other recycled materials. She lives in Alexandria, Virginia, with her husband, composer Jamie Kowalski.
